1) 7th Indian Breast Cancer Survivor Conference (7th & 8th Sept 2018)

The 7th Indian Breast Cancer Survivors meet held on 7th and 8th sept 2018 in association with Nag-Foundation – Poona Women’s Cancer initiative and Gokarma Oncology Medical Trust along with support from Goa Cancer Society, Muskaan NGO, Manipal Hospital and Anil Salgaonkar Foundation at ICG Dona Paula.

The inauguration of the 7th edition of the Indian Breast Cancer Survivors Conference was held at the hands of executive director Dempo Industries  Pallavi S. Dempo in the presence of fashion designer, Wendell Rodricks Vice – President Womens cancer initiative, Tata Hospital Mumbai, Deveika Bhojwani, HOD of Oncology Manipal Hospital Goa Gokarma Oncology Association Shona Nag  trustee of  NAG foundation Shona Nag and Trustee of Muskan Babita Agarwal. 

The purpose of the conference was to help women get back to a new normal after breast cancer treatment and act as a ambassadors spreading the importance of breast cancer prevention, a total of 145 women participated in the event .

The second day of the 7th Indian breast cancer survivors conference started with a rejuvenating and beneficial yoga therapy session by Aswini Raga that was structured around the health needs of the breast cancer survivor.

2) GIMACON Conference (30th Sept 2018)

GIMACON is an annual academic activity of the Goa State IMA, partly sponsored by Goa Cancer Society. The event was organised under the leadership of Ponda Branch IMA at Sungrace Garden, Ponda. During the commencement of the event the new doctors were awarded certificates of appreciation of work.

IMA Ponda branch-DILASA & IMA Ghar in Bandora village had a special mention in the program for their outstanding contribution in palliative care.

Dr. Riteish Naik was the Chief Guest with other eminent doctors of IMA Goa for the inaugural ceremony.

3) Cancer Detection Camp at Chodan (Chorao) on 14th October, 2018

The Goa Cancer Society in association with Lions club of Chodan and Manipal Hospitals Goa, organised a free cancer detection awareness camp. 

This was inaugurated by the Chief Guest & Sarpanch of the Village Panchayat of Chodan-Madel, Shri. Shamba Kalangutkar in the presence of Guest of Honour & Lions Zone Chairperson Lion Maria Da Silva, Member of the Goa Cancer Society and District Chairperson for Cancer Awareness Lion Gangaram Morajkar, faculty and district chairperson for Cancer detection Dr. Shekhar Salkar.

More than 150 local residents participated in the talk delivered by Dr. Shekhar Salkar on timely identification, prevention and treatment of Cancer, 70 women opted to have a check up with a team of doctors from Manipal Hospitals.

4) Cancer Detection Camp at Ponda, 21st October, 2018

Lions Club of Ponda Parivar in collaboration of Goa Cancer Society Panaji and Manipal Hospitals Goa organised a mega Cancer detection and awareness camp on Sunday 21st October 2018 at Cool and Spice Ponda, Goa.

Mr. Pradeep Naik with Dr. Shekhar Salkar inaugurated the camp.

More than 76 ladies were examined out of 18 there were suspicious with the cancer detected and four cases were found positive.

Dr. Shekhar Salkar also told that Goa Cancer Society along with Manipal Hospital is offering preventive check-up (Dr. Sharad Vaidya Cancer Screening Package) at Manipal  Hospital for a nominal charge of Rs.1500/- for women and Rs.1000/- for Men.

5) Cancer Detection Camp at Vasco, 27th October  2018

Lions Club of Chikli  Bogmale  in collaboration of Goa Cancer Society Panaji and Manipal Hospitals Goa organised a mega Cancer detection and awareness camp on 27st October 2018 at Saint Andrew Church, Vasco Goa.

Feola Rego  President of the Lions Club, Chikli welcomed all dignitaries, Father Gabrielle Cutinho, Saifulla Khan, Lavina Dsouza, Arnold Rego, President of Lions Club Kunal Shinde, Treasurer William Cardozo, Gangaram Morajkar Managing Committee Member of Goa Cancer Society along with Dr. Shekhar Salkar inaugurated the camp.

85 people  were examined out of  48 were women. Examination was done by Dr. Shekhar Salkar and his team from Manipal Hospital, Goa.

6) Press Conference on 30th Oct 2018

After the Annual General Body Meeting of the Goa Cancer Society the Managing Committee announced the Dr, Sharad Vaidya Cancer Screening Package at the Press Conference with the leading media houses of Goa. Earlier the cancer screening package was available only for a particular period in the year but henceforth it would be open to all throughout the year at Manipal Hospital at discounted rates i.e Females Rs.1500/- & Males Rs.1000/-

7) Fifth annual lecture organised on 7th December 2018

The fifth Annual lecture of the Goa Cancer Society was organised on Friday, 7th  December 2018 at the AC auditorium Dempo Charities trust S.S Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Cujira, Bambolim from 12 noon to 1 PM on the topic let’s talk answer by Dr. Rajesh Mistry, director Department of oncology and consultant surgeon, Thoracic Head & Neck Oncology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai.

The dignitaries on the dias included Dr. Rajesh Mistry guest speaker, Shri Shrinivas Dempo, President of Goa Cancer Society, Dr. Shekhar Salkar-Jt. Secretary, Goa Cancer Society, Dr. Radhika Naik-Principal of DCT’s S.S Dempo College of Commerce & Economics and Mr.Rajesh Bhatikar Administer of Dempo Charitable Trust. The programme was then inaugurated by lighting the lamp.

Dr. Rajesh Mistry delivered a informative lecture on “Lets Talk Cancer” and explained the causes of cancer, how lifestyle and habits can be instrumental in reducing the incidence of cancer. More than 250 students attended the lecture.

After the lecture there was a question answer session for the audience. The lecture ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shekhar Salkar.

8) Cancer awareness lecture at St.Xavier’s H.S.S Campus,Mapusa on 18th December 2018

The cancer awareness lecture was organised by Goa Cancer Society under the guidance of Gangaram Morajkar – Managing Committee Member of the Goa Cancer Society and Manipal Hospital Goa. Dr. Eugene Rent, Surgeon Oncology Dept. conducted the lecture.

Dr. Eugene gave an overview of cancer, its initial symptoms, diagnosis likely causes, myths and crucial and critical aspects of the disease. Dr. Rent also touched upon certain self-care techniques for certain prevalent forms of cancers in Goa. Total 120 staff members  and members of the Lions Club Mapusa were present.

9) DILASA 

A project Centre for terminally ill, Farmaguddi, Ponda was inaugurated on 22 nd December 2018. The Society has made Corpus donation of Rs.20 lacs against sponsor of four rooms ( two rooms with five beds, one patient’s relative room and one medical store room)

The Goa  Cancer Society signed Agreement with IMA Ponda Charitable Trust on 12th May 2016 to associate with DILASA-Centre for Terminally ill, where corpus donation of 20 lacs against  sponsor of 4 rooms (2 rooms with 5 beds  and 1  Relative Rest Room at first floor  and  1 Medical store Room at Ground Floor at Farmagudi, Dilasa Project Ponda.

Apart from corpous donation the Society has agreed to promote, support and provide all possible help in the activities like Cancer Detection Camps and Cancer Talks. Cancer Camps and CMEs in the last financial year.

10) At Don Bosco oratory Panjim on Sunday 17 February 2019 from 10:30 AM to 1 PM

Shri Rohan Ashok Khaunte  Honourable Minister of Revenue, IT , Labour and Employment was the Chief Guest of the function.

Dr. Shekhar Salkar, chief of Department of Oncology, Manipal Hospitals Goa and District chairperson for cancer detection delivered the lectures on cancer.

110 persons attended the programme and availed the benefit of the lectures Shri D Ravi Shankar, National Vice President, Shri KRS Nair, Chairman (AIMA), Shri Lalu Abraham President AIMA, Shri Dinesh Cheera Siri, convener programme committee, Shri PC treasurer AIMA, Shri Gangaram Morajkar, member of Managing Committee, The Goa Cancer Society.

After the lecture by Dr. Shekhar Salkar, the audience raised many questions and doubts on cancer Dr. Salkar was kind enough and patient to answer all the questions raised by the audience and cleared all doubts in such a manner which they clearly understood.

11) At Anjuman hall near Bilal Masjid Chandrawado, Fatorda, Margao Goa on 3 March 2019 from 10:30 AM to 1 PM

The program at Margao was inaugurated by the chief guest Shri Vijay Sardesai Honourable Minister for town and country planning and agriculture in the presence of Dr Shekhar Salkar Shri T Ravi Shankar national Vice president Shri KRS Nair chairman a I N8 Shri Lalu Abraham President AIMA Shri PC Prasad secretary AIMA Shri Anil Kumar see Vice President AIMA Shri Sunil be Nayar treasurer AIMA and the office bearers of Kerala Sangamam Madgaon, Kerala Kala Kendram Margao, Ayyappa Seva Sangham Margao.

122 persons attended the programme and availed the benefit of the lectures Dr. Shekhar Salkar answered the questions raised by the audience and the response from the audience was very good.

12) At Dr Isidore Carvalho multipurpose Hall Birla zuarinagar on 24 March 2019 from 3:30 PM to 6 PM

The program at Zaveri Nagar was inaugurated by the chief guest Sergent captain Prashant D Ayenger, commanding officer, INHS Jeevanti, Vasco In the presence of Dr. Shekhar Salkar and the office bearers of AIMA Goa, Kerala Sangamam, Zuarinagar and lion clubs of Majorda, Cansaulim, Velsa

83 persons attended the programme and away the benefit of the lectures. Dr. Shekhar Salkar answered the questions raised by the audience and the response from the audience was also very good.

13) Financial Assistance Scheme with Manipal Hospitals, Goa

The Goa Cancer Society in association with Manipal  Hospitals is running a Financial Assistance Scheme for treatment of cancer patients  since 2014 where  the Society and Manipal Hospital contribute 50-50. Till date  we have helped more than 200 patients sanctioning around Rs. 60 lacs.

For last Financial year i.e 2018-19 it was 99 patients(62 females & 37 males) with amt sanctioned of Rs.32,67,500/-

There is a prescribed form available to avail this scheme. The scheme is available for patients from any part of the country.

The financial assistance form includes  

  • Form A-Medical Certificate by Head of Department of Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospitals, Goa and Chief of Clinical Services, Manipal Hospitals, Goa
  • Form B-Self certified Income certificate(not exceeding Rs. 10,00,000/-) 
  • Form C-application to the President of The Goa Cancer Society by the Patient.
  • Form D-application to the President of The Goa Cancer Society (in case the patient is minor) by the Parent/Guardian.
  • Form E-undertaking given to the Hospital by the President of The Goa Cancer Society

The Medical Committee after having detail analysis of the patients file and income certificate and suggests the amount to be sanctioned.

14) Financial Assistance to patients from other hospitals besides Manipal Hospital

Goa Cancer Society also helps the cancer patients from other hospitals,this year total of 7 patients( 1male & 6 females) were assisted to the amt of Rs,1,32,500/-

15) Dr.Sharad Vaidya Cancer Screening Package

As this cancer screening pacakage was available throughout the year since 30th Oct 2018 after the AGM of the Goa Cancer Society,  more ane more people availed this facility at Manipal Hospital Goa.

This year total 435 patients used this package out of which 330 were females and 105 were males.
